Chantons! Pour prendre soin de nous.
Can choral singing can help cancer patients dissipate brain fog and more?
Chantons! Pour prendre soin de nous is a pilot project that explores the potential of choral singing to reduce anxiety, improve cognitive function, and increase well-being in cancer patients.
Description
This new interdisciplinary arts and sciences initiative is spearheaded by the Opéra de Montréal in collaboration with the Hôpital Charles-Lemoyne oncology department, the Université de Sherbrooke, and the University of Ottawa’s Music and Health Research Institute. Inspired by two other health and well-being programs (RESPIRER for long COVID patients and La voix harmonisée for trans women), Chantons! Pour prendre soin de nous works to support cancer patients with the help of activities designed and directed by Myriam Leblanc, soprano and choral conductor.
This pilot project is intended to measure the feasibility and impact of a choral singing program on the physical and psychological well-being of cancer patients. Its main goals are to:
- reduce anxiety, symptoms of depression, and brain fog caused by the disease;
- use singing to create a safe, inclusive space for personal expression;
- evaluate the positive effects of opera-inspired vocal and breathing techniques;
- identify benefits for participants and their loved ones.
The project takes place over two 12-week sessions (spring and fall 2025). During each session, participants form a choir, exploring opera choruses, madrigals, and other vocal works. Meanwhile, researchers will use a detailed experimental protocol to observe the effects of singing practice on both general well-being and quality of life in oncology. This innovative marriage of opera and health research makes music an essential part of providing care and promoting resilience.
