“By donating shares instead of cash, I became a member of the Ambassadors’ Circle!
And I got a tax break in the process.”
- Tamara Zakon, mathematician, artist, and member of the Ambassadors’ Circle
Gift of publicly traded securities (shares) is a great way to maximize the impact of your gift while enjoying significant tax benefits.
Gift of shares:
In addition to the charitable donation tax credit, a gift of shares affords you with a capital gain tax exemption. This combination of a tax credit and an exemption often makes donating stocks more tax-advantageous than donating cash, especially for securities that have appreciated significantly in value.
The donation of flow-through shares :
For high-income individuals (top tax bracket), donating flow-through shares is a powerful tool for leveraging generosity and impact that is unique to Canada, combining a tax deduction with a charitable donation credit.
HOW TO PROCEED?
Fill out the publicly traded securities donation form below.
Send the form to your broker or bank.
Your broker or bank transfers the shares directly (in kind) to the OdM’s broker.
The OdM sells the shares upon receipt and issues a tax receipt for the fair market value (calculated at the time of donation).
If you have any questions, we’d be delighted to assist you.
